The People’s Project are presently consulting with Armstrong Waste Management Ltd to have a number of pick up points for rubbish cleaned off local beaches throughout November in Dumfries and Galloway.
The idea is for local people to get out and about and take part in a beach clean – getting some fresh air and exercise and looking after the environment by removing detritus from the beach. However, rather than leaving the piles lying at the high water mark for the next winter storm to take it back out to sea, there will be drop off points at Powfoot (Queensberry Bay Park) bags are available from the shop, Southerness, Mersehead, Sandyhills, and The Doon, with others in the west of the region still to be confirmed.
The drop off points will be conveniently located for the refuse lorries from Armstrongs, so the piles cannot be left on the beach, – and that will require a little bit of extra effort! The work doesn’t have to be completed in one day, you can come back again and again throughout November and take one bag at a time to the drop off point. It is important that the rubbish picked from the beach is either bagged or tied together with rope found on the beach to prevent the litter from blowing about at the drop off point and to make it easier and quicker for the refuse men to do their job.
